Power station for motorhomes & Van life

Fridge, lighting, laptop, phone charging: a portable power station gives a motorhome or converted van silent autonomy, without starting a noisy generator.

Why use a power station in a motorhome or campervan?

A motorhome's factory leisure battery is rarely enough to live comfortably away from powered pitches. A portable power station steps in: it stores a large capacity in watt-hours (Wh) and delivers it through 230 V AC sockets, USB ports and 12 V outputs, just like at home. Unlike a generator, it is silent, fuel-free and exhaust-free, so it can be used inside the vehicle.

It works both as the main power source for a light campervan build and as a mobile backup in an already-equipped motorhome, easily moved from the living area to the boot or outdoors for a meal.

What capacity (Wh) for a motorhome?

It depends on your appliances and target autonomy. As a quick guide:

  • 300 to 600 Wh: a light weekend, for LED lighting, phone charging, a laptop and a small cooler used intermittently.
  • 1000 to 1500 Wh: several days for a couple, with a compressor fridge, ventilation, light cooking and media.
  • 2000 Wh and up: real multi-day autonomy, electric cooking (kettle, coffee maker) included, especially with solar charging during the day.

The right method is to add up your appliances' daily consumption (in Wh), then keep a margin, since fully draining a battery shortens its life. LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) models are best suited here: several thousand charge cycles, meaning years of intensive use.

What output power? What you can run

Capacity (Wh) sets the duration; output power (W) sets what you can run at once. A 300 to 600 W output covers electronics and a cooler; aim for 1500 to 2000 W for a kettle, coffee maker or induction hob, which are very power-hungry. Always check your most demanding appliance before buying.

Charging: mains, 12 V socket and solar

Three charging methods combine in a motorhome. On a 230 V hookup at a campsite, top-up is fastest (often under an hour on recent models). While driving, the 12 V socket or a DC charger keeps it topped up. Finally, one or more solar panels make the whole setup self-sufficient: the winning combination for van life, turning the station into a small onboard solar storage system.

Power station or fixed leisure battery?

The two are complementary. A permanently installed LiFePO4 leisure battery with an inverter remains the best base for a heavy, permanent setup. The portable power station wins on flexibility: no installation, you take it out of the vehicle, charge it anywhere and move it between vehicles without any work. Many travellers start with a station before investing in a fixed install.

Its MPPT module accepts up to 400 W of solar panels, enough to fully recharge it during the day with two portable panels. It also recharges while driving thanks to its built-in car charger, avoiding a separate converter. Its LiFePO4 chemistry (around 4000 cycles) withstands the daily cycling of converted-vehicle use, unlike classic lithium batteries that age faster. At 11.5 kg, it remains easy to lift out of the vehicle for an evening outside.

  • Power : 2200 W continuous, 4400 W peak (R-Drive)
  • Recharge : 0 to 100% in 1h12 on mains, up to 800 W solar
  • Weight : 16.2 kg, IP56 (battery), 5-year warranty
  • Expandable to 5120 Wh cable-free, 30 ms UPS
Use case: Motorhome & Van life

In a motorhome, the Cube 1000 covers the essentials: its base 1024 Wh powers lighting, device charging and a small fridge, and its 2200 W handles a kettle or a portable hob. Its 12/24 V car input lets it recharge on the road, and cable-free expandability is a real plus for longer trips that need more autonomy without switching stations. It's still heavier (16.2 kg) than the lightest van-life dedicated stations, worth weighing up if onboard space and weight are tight. For a motorhome where it stays fitted rather than moved daily, it wins on power and room to grow.
The Segway Cube 1000 is a portable power station with a 1024 Wh LFP battery, delivering 2200 W continuous output and up to 4400 W peak via its R-Drive function. Its standout feature is a modular design that accepts up to four cable-free add-on batteries, raising total capacity to 5120 Wh. It recharges at up to 1250 W on mains power (0 to 100% in around 1h12) or up to 800 W via solar with MPPT, and includes a UPS function that switches over in 30 milliseconds during a power cut. Its 26.1 kg weight, though, points to a fixed spot in the vehicle rather than frequent handling, worth planning for in the fit-out.
The Segway Cube 2000 is a modular power station rated at 2048Wh, expandable up to 5120Wh with additional 1kWh battery blocks. Its automotive-grade LFP battery is rated for over 4000 cycles with a 5-year warranty, and its UPS function switches over in 30 milliseconds to protect sensitive devices during a power cut. EcoFlow Trail 300 DC Suitable

£169.00 (4)

A 100% DC power station of 288Wh with a 12V car outlet: dual 140W USB-C, long-life LiFePO4 battery, built for camping and road trips.

  • Capacity : 288 Wh (LiFePO4, 3000+ cycles)
  • Output : 300W max, 100% direct current (DC)
  • Ports : 2x USB-C 140W, 2x USB-A, 12V outlet (120W)
  • Weight : 2.58 kg (167 x 115 x 166 mm)
  • 288Wh pure DC, dual 140W USB-C and a 12V outlet, 2.58 kg
Use case: Motorhome & Van life

In a motorhome or campervan, the Trail 300 DC's 12V car outlet (120W) is handy for a small backup fridge, a pump or a car accessory, something the Trail 200 DC cannot do. Its two 140W USB-C ports and its dedicated solar port up to 110W nicely complement the vehicle's electrical setup on short trips. With 288 Wh and 2.58 kg, however, it remains a top-up solution, not a replacement for a motorhome's main electrical system: without a 230V mains socket, equipment that needs one stays out of reach.
The EcoFlow Trail 300 DC is a portable power station of 288Wh that goes all-in on direct current: no AC inverter, so no conversion losses, to power a laptop, a drone, a 12V cooler or camping lamps for longer. Its LiFePO4 battery lasts over 3000 cycles, it weighs 2.58 kg and delivers up to 300W, with two 140W USB-C ports and a 12V car outlet, a first for the Trail range. Its solar input up to 800W recharges it at a stop in good weather. Frequently asked questions

For a light weekend, 300 to 600 Wh is enough (lighting, charging, small cooler). For several days for two with a compressor fridge, aim for 1000 to 1500 Wh, and 2000 Wh or more if you cook electrically. Solar significantly extends autonomy.

Yes. A compressor fridge draws roughly 40 to 60 W on average: a 1000 Wh station runs it for a good part of the day, longer with solar charging. Just make sure the output power exceeds the compressor's start-up surge.

Through the 12 V socket or a dedicated DC charger, the station recharges as you drive. It is an ideal complement to solar charging when parked and to 230 V hookups at sites.

A fixed leisure battery suits large permanent installs. The portable station offers more flexibility: nothing to install, you take it out of the van and move it between vehicles freely. The two complement each other well.
