Detailed overview: Victron 12V 90Ah gel solar battery
In a solar kit, the battery is the heart of the system: it stores the energy produced by the panels (or a wind turbine, a generator) and releases it when required. It therefore has to be durable and hold its charge for a long time. This Victron Energy battery uses gel technology (VRLA, Valve Regulated Lead Acid), meaning a gelled electrolyte: 100% sealed, maintenance-free, and better at cycling than an equivalent AGM.
With a capacity of 90 Ah at C20 (80 Ah at C10) at 12 V, it offers a very long service life, rated up to 12 years in float, and a self-discharge below 2% per month at 20 °C, ideal for prolonged storage. Rugged against shocks and vibration, tolerant of deep discharges, it can be installed in a poorly ventilated space, which makes it perfect for an off-grid site, a motorhome or a boat.
It weighs 26 kg for dimensions of around 35 x 18 x 17 cm, with M8 copper terminals for excellent contact. Available in several capacities, the 90 Ah / 12 V version strikes, in our view, the best balance between autonomy and size for most installations. True to Victron's reputation, it is one of the market benchmarks.

Our tester's review: Julien De Jurquet
We use this Victron gel battery on an off-grid installation, and it inspires confidence. No maintenance, no fumes: we even installed it in a poorly ventilated box without issue. After several deep-discharge cycles (nights without sun), it comes back without weakening and holds its voltage well. The 26 kg are felt when carrying it, and the price is not the lowest on the market, but here you pay for Victron's longevity and reliability. As the core of a solar kit built to last, it is a reassuring investment.
Frequently asked questions: Victron 12V 90Ah gel solar battery
Both are sealed and maintenance-free (VRLA). Gel technology, with its gelled electrolyte, generally handles deep discharges and cycling better, with a longer service life, which makes it ideal for solar. AGM is often a little cheaper.
No. Being a gel VRLA type, it is fully sealed: no topping up with water, no fumes. It can be installed in a poorly ventilated space, a motorhome or a boat, and stored for a long time thanks to its low self-discharge.
Victron rates it up to 12 years of service life in float use, with good cycling endurance. Its longevity depends on the depth of discharge and temperature: the more moderate the discharges, the longer it lasts.
