Detailed overview: Renogy DCC50S 50A MPPT DC-DC charger
The Renogy DCC50S is a 12V 50A dual-input on-board battery charger, designed to recharge the auxiliary (service) battery of a converted van, a camper, a boat or a 4x4. Its distinctive feature is combining two functions in a single unit: a DC-DC charger (battery booster) and an MPPT solar controller.
While driving, it draws energy from the starter battery linked to the alternator and feeds it to the auxiliary battery at a current up to 50A, a much faster and more complete recharge than with a simple split-charge relay. When parked, its built-in MPPT optimises charging from solar panels (up to 50V and 660W input). Both sources can be connected at the same time, the unit then intelligently managing their split.
With an output power of 660W and a charging efficiency of 94%, the DCC50S is compatible with all major technologies: flooded lead-acid, Gel, AGM and lithium LiFePO4, via configurable charge profiles. Its voltage-sensitive relay (VSR) ensures reliable isolation between the starter battery and the service battery, avoiding any risk of draining the vehicle battery. Many protections (overvoltage, undervoltage, overload, overheating, reverse polarity, short-circuit) secure the installation.
An RJ45 communication port lets you add an optional Bluetooth module (BT-2) to monitor charging in real time via the Renogy DC Home app. Note that on a vehicle with a smart alternator, you must connect the ignition wire (IGN) to trigger charging, and size the cables properly given the 50A. For a serious nomadic installation combining alternator and solar, the Renogy DCC50S is a complete, proven solution.
Comparison
How does the Renogy DCC50S compare with other on-board charging solutions?
| Model | Current | Solar MPPT input | Lithium | Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renogy DCC50S | 50A | Yes (built-in) | Yes | Optional |
| Renogy DCC30S | 30A | Yes (built-in) | Yes | Optional |
| Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 | 30A | No | Yes | Built-in |
The Renogy DCC50S stands out for its high 50A current and built-in solar MPPT controller, absent from the Victron Orion which only handles the alternator (a separate solar controller must be added). The DCC30S is identical at 30A for more modest installations. For a van combining alternator and solar panels, the DCC50S offers the best all-in-one.

Our tester's review: Gilles Caron
The Renogy DCC50S is one of the key pieces of equipment in a converted van, and in use it delivers on its promises. We installed it to recharge an auxiliary lithium battery, with one input from the alternator and another from roof-mounted solar panels. The result is impressive: while driving, the service battery recharges at 50A, far faster than with a simple split charger, and once parked, the MPPT controller takes over with solar. Having both functions in a single unit greatly simplifies installation and wiring. The voltage-sensitive relay cleanly isolates the starter battery, avoiding a dead battery in the morning. Adding the optional Bluetooth module lets you monitor charging on the app, which is very handy. Points to plan for: you must size the cables properly (50A is a lot of current) and set the right battery profile, and with a smart alternator an ignition wire is needed. But for a serious van or 4x4 installation, it is a sure bet.
Frequently asked questions: Renogy DCC50S 50A MPPT DC-DC charger
Yes. It is a dual-input charger: it recharges the auxiliary battery from the alternator while driving (up to 50A) and from solar panels when parked thanks to its built-in MPPT controller. Both sources can be used together.
Yes. It is compatible with lead-acid (flooded, Gel, AGM) and lithium LiFePO4 batteries, via configurable charge profiles. You simply need to select the correct battery type during installation.
Yes, but on a vehicle with a smart alternator (Euro 6), you must connect the ignition wire (IGN) to trigger charging, because the alternator voltage varies and does not always suffice to activate the charger automatically.
Its solar input accepts up to 50V and 660W, with a built-in MPPT controller that optimises efficiency. Combined with the alternator input, it delivers a total charge current up to 50A to the auxiliary battery.
