Detailed overview: Einhell CE-BC 4 M 4 A battery charger

A modern battery charger no longer simply pushes current until the battery is full. The CE-BC 4 M belongs to the family of so-called smart chargers, microprocessor controlled, which assess the battery's condition and split charging into several successive phases. A recovery phase for deeply discharged batteries, a main constant-current phase, then a constant-voltage absorption phase that fills the last few percent without heating the plates.

On output, the unit delivers up to 4 amps and accepts both 6 and 12 volts, covering batteries for motorcycles, scooters, ride-on mowers, cars and small vans. An LCD screen continuously shows measured voltage and charging progress, valuable information for telling whether a battery is recovering or is definitively dead.

The trickle function is the one that changes daily life. Once the battery is full, the charger does not simply stop: it monitors voltage and feeds back small amounts of current when it drops. You can therefore leave it connected for weeks, or the whole off-season, with no risk of overcharging. It is the classic defence against a flat battery at the first spring start.

The IP65 protection rating is rare in this price bracket. The first digit means complete dust tightness, the second resistance to low-pressure water jets. In practice the charger tolerates a damp garage, an open shelter or a dusty workshop with no special precautions. The winter mode, used when temperatures fall below 5 °C, adapts the charging profile to the behaviour of a cold battery, which accepts current less readily.

You need to know its limit: this model does not charge lithium iron phosphate batteries. If your motorhome, boat or solar installation runs on LiFePO4, look instead at the Einhell CE-BC 5 M LiFePO4 charger, which adds that compatibility. For heavier use or proper diagnostics, our car accessories section gathers battery testers and jump starters.

Comparison

Under fifty euros, the CE-BC 4 M compares mainly with what the catalogue already offered higher up the range. Here is how it sits against the CTEK MXS 5.0 and the Noco Genius5, two premium references, and against its lithium-capable cousin.

The conclusion is clear: on the functions that matter to a private owner, the CE-BC 4 M is almost level with units costing twice as much. The CTEK MXS 5.0 keeps an edge on the refinement of its programmes and its reputation for longevity, the Noco Genius5 adds lithium support and a repair mode, but neither justifies double the price for ordinary domestic use. The real question to ask is one of chemistry: if there is LiFePO4 in your garage, go straight to the CE-BC 5 M for seventeen euros more.

With close to two thousand four hundred reviews and a 4.6 average, the CE-BC 4 M is among Europe's best-selling chargers, and the reason comes down to value. At forty euros you get the essentials of what models three times dearer offer. Microprocessor control splits charging into successive stages, which avoids cooking a battery at the end of the cycle, and the trickle function lets you leave it connected all winter on a car that sits idle. That is exactly the use we recommend it for: the weekend runabout, the motorcycle stored from October to March, the motorhome on its parking space. The IP65 rating deserves a mention at this price. Most rivals in this bracket settle for a closed housing with no declared rating; here dust and splashes are officially covered, which allows a damp garage or a garden shed. The winter mode is not a gimmick either: below 5 °C a battery accepts charge less readily, and the dedicated profile avoids working it as hard as in summer. Two limits to know about. Four amps is comfortable for a small car or a motorcycle battery, but slow on a large diesel estate or motorhome pack: expect a full night for a deeply discharged 100 Ah battery. And it does not handle LiFePO4 lithium batteries, increasingly common on motorhomes and boats; for those, look at the CE-BC 5 M LiFePO4 version. For everything else, it is hard to beat at this price.

Frequently asked questions: Einhell CE-BC 4 M 4 A battery charger

Yes, and that is its most useful role. The trickle function monitors voltage once the battery is full and feeds back small amounts of current when it drops. There is no risk of overcharging, and the battery is ready for the spring restart.

No, this model is designed for lead-acid, gel, AGM and maintenance-free batteries. For lithium iron phosphate, common on motorhomes and solar installations, you need the CE-BC 5 M LiFePO4 version, sold for about fifteen euros more.

At 4 amps, expect around ten hours for a half-empty 45 Ah city car battery, and a full night for a deeply discharged 100 Ah unit. That is the trade-off of gentle charging, which is kinder to service life.

It tolerates dust and water splashes, so a damp garage or an open shelter poses no problem. IP65 does not mean immersion, however: avoid leaving it out in driving rain or sitting on the ground in a puddle.
