Compatibles cost three to five times less and work well as spares. On recent Canon, Nikon and Sony bodies, however, an authentication chip may block the remaining percentage display, or reject the battery outright. Check the stated compatibility with your exact body reference before buying.
Cabin, always, like any lithium battery. Carry them in their original case or with the contacts taped over, because a short circuit between two bare batteries in a pocket is the most common cause of incident. Most airlines cap spares at twenty batteries per passenger.
The CIPA figure printed in the specifications gives an order of magnitude: 300 to 400 frames for a full-frame mirrorless, 800 to 1,200 for a DSLR thanks to its optical viewfinder, which draws nothing. In practice, using the screen, stabilisation and video often halves that number.
Below 5 degrees the internal resistance of lithium cells rises and voltage falls faster: the camera thinks the battery is empty while energy remains. Keep a spare in an inside pocket, against your body, and rotate the two. Once warmed, a battery declared dead often gives back 30 per cent of its runtime.
Most bodies released since 2018 allow it, which means you can recharge from a power bank on assignment. Mind the distinction: some models only charge when switched off, others accept continuous power while shooting. That nuance appears in the manual under USB charging and USB power delivery.
At 40 to 60 per cent charge, dry and between 10 and 20 degrees, never in a camera bag left in a car. A battery stored full for six months permanently loses 5 to 10 per cent of capacity, and one stored empty risks a deep discharge that makes it unrecoverable.
