The Victron Phoenix 24/1600 Smart converts a battery bank's 24 volts DC into 230 volts AC. It is rated at 1600 VA under non-linear load, meaning 1300 watts continuous at 25 °C and 1200 watts at 40 °C, with an admissible 3000 watt peak. In our line-up it opens the 24 volt segment, more efficient than 12 volts at carrying serious power without oversized cable.
The signal produced is a genuine pure sine wave, generated by a full-bridge topology paired with a toroidal transformer, the same proven architecture used across the rest of the Phoenix range. Efficiency climbs to 94%, and the 230V output voltage (adjustable ±3%) and the frequency (50 or 60 Hz) stay stable regardless of load.
Unlike the VE.Bus Compact version of the same rating, which is configured through a dedicated panel or an MK3-USB interface, this Smart version has Bluetooth built in: all configuration (alarm thresholds, low-voltage cut-off, output voltage and frequency, ECO mode) and monitoring happen from the free VictronConnect app, with no dongle or extra cable to add. A VE.Direct port is still available for a wired link to a computer or a GX device. ECO mode brings standby draw down to 1.3 watts when no sufficient load is detected, against 9 watts in normal operation.
The unit protects itself against output short-circuit, overload, high or low battery voltage, overheating and excessive DC ripple. A programmable relay (230V/4A AC, 4A up to 35V or 1A up to 60V DC) can drive an external contactor or alarm. The steel enclosure, rated IP21, weighs 12 kilograms for 219 x 125 x 485 mm, works from -40 °C to +65 °C and connects via screw terminals (AC output) and M8 bolts (battery input). Victron warrants the unit for five years.
For an equivalent 12 volt installation, the Phoenix 12/2000 remains a solid alternative. And to know exactly what is left in the battery bank feeding this inverter, a battery monitor usefully rounds out the installation.

The VE.Bus Compact costs barely more and weighs two kilos less, but it trades native Bluetooth for the VE.Bus protocol, which needs a dedicated panel or an MK3-USB interface to configure, in exchange for the option of running it in parallel or three-phase, an unnecessary feature for a standalone installation. The Phoenix 24/2000 Smart only makes sense if 1300 watts continuous genuinely looks tight. As for the Phoenix 12/1600 Smart, it only makes sense if the battery bank is already wired for 12 volts: for equal power, 24 volts remains the more efficient choice on the cabling side. For a simple, standalone 24V installation, the Phoenix 24/1600 Smart remains the best compromise in this line-up.

Our tester's review: Gilles Caron
We fitted this Phoenix 24/1600 Smart to a 24 volt service bank, curious about what really changes when you move up from our usual 12V setups. First observation: for the same power, the current drawn from the battery is half what it would be at 12V, which noticeably eases the cable gauge needed up to the M8 terminals. The built-in Bluetooth delivers on its promise: instant pairing with VictronConnect, settings reachable in a few taps, including the ECO mode threshold we had to raise to stop it cutting power to a small charger left plugged in. The pure sine output caused no trouble at all, even with a small compressor that is normally hard to start. The steel enclosure feels reassuring, but its 12 kilos are worth planning for when mounting it. Only real drawback: unlike the VE.Bus Compact version, a touch cheaper and lighter, this Smart model cannot be run in parallel or three-phase, a limit worth knowing if the installation might grow later. For a standalone 24V setup, it is hard to beat at this price point.
