Power tool batteries

On a tool battery it is not the amp-hours that decide the torque available, but the quality of the cells delivering them.

Two 18 V, 4 Ah packs can behave very differently under load: the one fitted with cells able to deliver high current will hold its speed through a wood screw, while the other sags in voltage and trips its protection. That is the criterion invisible on the packaging and yet the most decisive in use. The second point is compatibility: every manufacturer has its own system and locking, and third-party packs sometimes work but lose communication with the original charger. We state the cells used where the information is available, the capacity actually returned and the compatibility we observed.

Einhell PXC 18V 4.0 Ah Battery

See price and availability (41)

The original 4 Ah pack that powers a drill, a lawnmower or a 230 V inverter alike, across a range of more than 300 machines.

  • Capacity: 4.0 Ah, meaning 72 Wh at 18 V
  • Technology: Lithium-ion, built-in battery management
  • Compatibility: The whole Power X-Change range
  • Display: 3-segment LED charge indicator
  • One battery for more than 300 machines
Power X-Change is the bet Einhell placed more than ten years ago: a single battery for the entire cordless range, from DIY to garden work. This 4.0 Ah reference is its most common format, the one that best balances runtime against weight. At 18 nominal volts it stores 72 watt-hours, enough to run a screwdriver for a good day, a mower over a small lawn, or a 230 V inverter for around twenty minutes at full load. A three-segment LED indicator shows the remaining level at the press of a button, and the internal electronics watch temperature and cell balancing to protect service life.
With close to seven thousand customer reviews, this battery is among the best sellers in its category, and it is easy to see why. The central argument is not technical but economic: as long as you stay with Einhell, one battery does everything. We have watched it move from a drill to a blower and then to a 230 V inverter in the same day, with no adapter and no improvising. On the 4 Ah format specifically, the balance is good. The 2 Ah packs run down too quickly on demanding tools, the 6 Ah ones noticeably weigh down a screwdriver held at arm's length; the 4 Ah sits in between, with 72 watt-hours for a little over six hundred grams. The three-segment LED indicator is basic, but it has the merit of existing and stops you running flat at the wrong moment. Two honest remarks, however. The stated capacity is measured under favourable conditions: on a tool that draws hard, expect closer to ninety per cent of the theoretical figure, which is normal for the sector. And the charger is never supplied with these batteries sold on their own, a detail that catches out hurried buyers: check you already have one, otherwise a starter kit works out cheaper than buying both separately. Beyond that, it is a reliable, thoroughly proven product, and the best ticket into an ecosystem that has grown a great deal.

Yes, within the same brand and the same mounting system: it is the same product. The 20 V figure is the no-load voltage, the 18 V is the nominal voltage under load, on five identical lithium cells. The 20 V badge is mainly a marketing argument, not a technical difference.

No, each maker imposes its own mounting rail and its own communication protocol. Adapters exist, but they disable the BMS thermal protection and current limiting. Choosing a brand therefore commits your whole tool collection, and that is the real criterion to weigh before the first purchase.

The amp-hour measures runtime, not power. A 5 Ah pack lasts two and a half times longer than a 2 Ah at the same voltage, but it does not drive screws harder. It also weighs twice as much. For a drill, 2 Ah is enough; for a saw or a grinder you need 4 to 5 Ah.

It is neither safe nor advisable. A tool battery needs a precise charge profile and a dialogue with the BMS to balance its cells. Improvised setups from a bench power supply cause overheating, swelling and fire risk. An original or certified compatible charger costs less than an incident.

Often because it has been stored flat or in the cold. A cell that drops below 2.5 V degrades irreversibly. Also check that the tool is not being forced: a blunt bit or a clogged blade triples consumption. Finally, a pack past 300 cycles has naturally lost 20 to 30 per cent of its runtime.

Cold storage is fine down to around -10 degrees, but charging below 0 degrees damages the cells. Bring the battery back to room temperature for an hour before putting it on the charger. Store it half charged, never full or empty, and top it up every three months.
