Detailed overview: Victron Orion-Tr Smart 30A isolated alternator charger
The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 Isolated is an alternator (DC-DC) charger designed to top up the leisure (house) battery of a converted van, a motorhome or a boat from the starter battery connected to the alternator. While driving, it delivers a charge current of up to 30A continuous at 40 °C (up to 40A for ten seconds), for 360 watts of power.
Its defining feature, flagged by the word "isolated", is a 200 volt galvanic isolation between input, output and casing. In practice, the electrical circuits of the starter battery and the leisure battery are completely separated, with no shared ground. That is a genuine safety benefit whenever the two batteries cannot share a common ground, for example on a van whose onboard electronics are sensitive to interference, or on a boat where two separate circuits limit the risk of galvanic corrosion.
The unit is compatible with lead-acid batteries (flooded, Gel, AGM) and lithium LiFePO4, through configurable charge profiles (a three-stage adaptive algorithm: bulk, absorption, float). Built-in Bluetooth lets you monitor and configure it from a smartphone with the VictronConnect app: battery profile, engine-detection start and stop thresholds, and real-time charge monitoring.
The IP43 casing accepts an input of 8 to 17 volts, works from -20 to +55 °C, and weighs 1.6 kilos in a compact 130 x 186 x 81 mm footprint. Multiple units can be connected in parallel to increase output power. Victron warrants the unit for five years. If your two battery grounds are already common, the non-isolated version of the same unit is enough and costs less; for a setup combining alternator and solar charging, also see the Renogy DCC50S, which builds in an MPPT solar controller alongside the alternator charger.

Comparison
How does the Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 Isolated compare with other on-board charging solutions?
| Criterion | Victron Orion-Tr Smart Isolated | Victron Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated | Renogy DCC50S |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current | 30A | 30A | 50A |
| Galvanic isolation | Yes, 200V | No | Not stated |
| Solar MPPT input | No | No | Yes (built-in) |
| Bluetooth | Built-in | Built-in | Optional |
| Observed price | ≈ £179 | ≈ £140 | ≈ £200 |
The non-isolated version of the same Orion-Tr Smart costs a little less and is plenty once the two battery grounds can safely be tied together. The Renogy DCC50S pushes current to 50A and adds a built-in solar MPPT controller, a genuine advantage for a van combining alternator and solar panels, but without the Victron's galvanic isolation. For genuine electrical separation between two circuits, the Orion-Tr Smart Isolated remains the reference.

Our tester's review: Gilles Caron
You fit the Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 Isolated for one specific reason: to electrically separate the leisure battery from a starter battery whose ground cannot safely be tied to it, typically a converted van whose onboard electronics are sensitive to interference. Once wired in, the unit charges the leisure battery at up to 30A while driving, which on a 100 to 200Ah lithium bank makes a real difference over a simple split-charge relay. The VictronConnect app is genuinely pleasant to use: pick the battery profile, set the engine-detection threshold, and watch the charge in real time from the passenger seat. The casing runs properly hot at full power, which is expected given the conversion involved, but it is worth planning a bit of ventilation if it is mounted inside a closed locker. The price sits a step above a basic battery isolator, and it is worth checking you genuinely need the isolated version: the cheaper non-isolated model is plenty if the two battery grounds are already common. For a van or a boat with two separate circuits, though, this is exactly the right tool, reliable and well thought out.
Frequently asked questions: Victron Orion-Tr Smart 30A isolated alternator charger
