On a solar installation the battery decides everything: its chemistry sets the cycle life, and its usable capacity is never the number printed on the label.

A lead-acid or AGM battery cannot be discharged beyond 50 per cent without damage: a nominal 100 Ah therefore offers only 50 Ah you can actually use. A LiFePO4 goes down to 80 or 90 per cent unharmed and lasts 3,000 to 6,000 cycles where lead gives 300 to 500. In practice lithium costs twice as much to buy and three to five times less per cycle. For each model we state the genuinely usable capacity, the presence and quality of the BMS, and the charging temperature range, often the real weak point in an outdoor installation in winter.

The SolarFlow 2400 AC is not a microinverter but an AC-coupled home battery: it sits between the meter and the home, absorbs up to 2400 watts to charge and gives back as much when electricity is expensive. The base configuration pairs the unit with an AB3000X battery of 2880 watt-hours in lithium iron phosphate, expandable to 17.28 kWh with six modules. An 800 watt off-grid outlet takes over during a power cut, and the AI-driven HEMS manager arbitrates according to hourly tariffs.
The SolarFlow 2400 AC marks a change of nature in Zendure's range, and that is worth understanding before buying. The SolarFlow 800 and its derivatives are microinverters: you plug solar panels into them. This one has no photovoltaic input, it is AC-coupled. In other words it sits between your installation and the home, and stores electricity indifferently from your existing panels or from the grid when it is cheap. That is home-battery logic, not balcony-kit logic, and it opens a use case microinverters do not cover: pure tariff arbitrage, profitable without a single panel. The figures follow that ambition. The 2400 watt rating in both directions absorbs a production peak or covers a household's real evening consumption, where the regulatory 800 watts of a balcony kit only erase the standby baseline. The 2880 watt-hours of the supplied AB3000X battery represent a full evening for an average household, and stacking to 17.28 kWh puts the system on a par with conventional residential storage. The quoted 6000 cycles on LiFePO4 cells sit within today's serious standards. Three points deserve attention before ordering. The backup outlet is limited to 800 watts: it saves the fridge, the router and the lighting during a cut, not the hob. The IP65 rating lapses as soon as that off-grid socket is used or the cover is not properly closed, which Zendure states honestly. Finally, at 1199 euros in its entry configuration, the unit addresses buyers who have already worked out their off-peak to peak price gap: that is where its payback lies, more than in solar self-consumption.

The weight saving is welcome, and the built-in BMS is reassuring day to day against overcharge and short circuits. The low-temperature protection is a real plus to avoid damaging the cells in winter. We use it both to power a fridge, lighting and a pump in a van, and to store the output of a small solar kit. Two honest caveats: the 100A BMS limits discharge current, which is enough for most uses but may restrict a very powerful inverter, and like any LiFePO4, charging below 0°C is not advised (hence the protection). To replace lead with reliable lithium without breaking the bank, it is excellent value.

LiFePO4 wins on a fixed installation: 3,000 to 4,000 cycles against 500 to 1,000, no thermal drift and a stable voltage down to 90 per cent discharge. NMC lithium-ion only keeps the edge on weight and bulk, which matters for genuinely portable use.

With a charger or controller set to the LiFePO4 profile, absorbing at 14.2 to 14.6 V for a 12 V bank, and without a prolonged float stage. A classic lead-acid charger will undercharge it or hold it at voltage needlessly. The built-in BMS protects against overcharge, but it does not replace a correct charge profile.

Yes in most installations, on three conditions: adapt the charger profile, check that the alternator or controller copes with the higher inrush current, and check the dimensions, since LiFePO4 is more compact. The gain is clear: 100 Ah of LiFePO4 gives as much usable energy as 200 Ah of lead, at half the weight.

A 400 watt panel produces 1.4 to 1.8 kWh on a good summer day. To store that output without clipping it you need at least 150 Ah at 12 V (1.9 kWh). Below 100 Ah the battery saturates by midday and the energy is lost. Rule of thumb: 25 to 40 Ah of 12 V storage per 100 watts of panel.

It discharges happily down to -20 degrees, but it must not be charged below 0 degrees: that causes metallic lithium plating which destroys the cells irreversibly. Models aimed at vans and boats therefore include internal heating or a cold charge cut-off managed by the BMS.

A LiFePO4 accepts 80 to 90 per cent discharge without harm, against 50 per cent at most for a lead-acid battery if you want to preserve its life. That is why you should always compare genuinely usable energy, not the raw capacity printed on the label.
