Votronic VCC 1212-30

Detailed overview: Votronic 30A alternator charger
The Votronic VCC 1212-30 is an onboard 12V charger with a current limited to 20A (30A maximum), designed to charge the leisure battery of a motorhome, converted van or boat from the vehicle's alternator. Not galvanically isolated, it combines a compact footprint with straightforward installation, in a fan-cooled housing that stays reasonably unobtrusive once fitted.
While driving, the VCC 1212-30 draws current from the starter battery and feeds it into the leisure battery using an IU1oU2oU3 charging curve suited to each battery type: wet lead-acid, Gel, AGM and LiFePO4 lithium. It automatically compensates for line losses and alternator voltage swings, including on Euro 6 vehicles with a smart alternator, where the output voltage constantly fluctuates and is no longer enough to properly charge a leisure battery with a simple split-charge relay.
A temperature sensor (supplied) is attached to the battery to automatically adjust the charging voltage to its real temperature, extending its service life and avoiding any risk of overcharging in hot or cold conditions. The VCC 1212-30 is recommended for leisure batteries from 60 to 200 Ah (260 Ah maximum), with a charging current limited to 20A by default, adjustable up to 30A depending on battery capacity.
Several built-in protections (overvoltage, undervoltage, overheating, reverse polarity, short circuit) secure the installation, and the unit runs on automatic D+ or ignition control, with no day-to-day intervention needed. Compact (146 x 67 x 40 mm) and light (280 g), it fits easily into a technical compartment. For a reliable nomadic setup, pairing engine start and leisure batteries without risking a flat starter battery, the Votronic VCC 1212-30 remains a safe bet among van and motorhome installers.

The Votronic VCC 1212-30 stands out for its included temperature sensor, a rare feature at this price point, and its very compact footprint. The Renogy DCC50S offers a much higher current (50A) and built-in solar MPPT, at the cost of a bulkier housing. The Victron Orion-Tr Smart leans on Bluetooth in an equally compact format, while the CTEK D250SE targets smaller battery banks. For a standard van or motorhome install with no need for built-in solar, the VCC 1212-30 remains a reliable, proven choice.

Our tester's review: Gilles Caron
We fitted the Votronic VCC 1212-30 in a converted panel van, with a 100 Ah LiFePO4 leisure battery wired to the alternator. The result: charging while driving is noticeably faster than the old split-charge relay it replaced. The supplied temperature sensor clips easily onto the battery, and once the right charging profile is selected (LiFePO4 in our case), the unit runs without any further fiddling. The fan kicks in under heavy load but stays fairly quiet. On a van with a smart Euro 6 alternator, we had to wire in the ignition line to reliably trigger charging, a step that is not to be skipped and is well explained in the manual. The only downside: at 30A, the recommended cable gauge is fairly heavy, and the housing gets noticeably warm under full summer load. For a serious van or motorhome build combining alternator and lithium battery, the VCC 1212-30 largely delivers on its promise.
Frequently asked questions: Votronic 30A alternator charger
Yes. The VCC 1212-30 has a dedicated charging profile for LiFePO4 lithium batteries, alongside profiles for wet lead-acid, Gel and AGM. Just select the right battery type during installation.
The charging current is limited to 20A by default, adjustable up to 30A maximum depending on the leisure battery's capacity, recommended between 60 and 260 Ah.
Yes, it automatically compensates for the voltage swings of a smart alternator. On some vehicles you need to wire in the ignition line (IGN) to reliably trigger charging.
A temperature sensor is included in the box and in the price. It automatically adjusts the charging voltage to the battery's real temperature, for a safer and more complete charge.
