The Victron Phoenix 12/1200 VE.Direct converts a battery bank's 12 volts DC into 230 volts AC. It is rated at 1200 VA, meaning 1000 watts continuous at 25 °C and 850 watts at 40 °C, with an admissible 2200 watt peak. It is the model in the range that opens the door to everyday household appliances.

The signal produced is a genuine pure sine wave, generated by a full-bridge topology paired with a toroidal transformer. That architecture explains the 7.4 kilo weight and the series' recognised robustness: it copes better with brief overloads and with hot or vibrating environments than a light high-frequency design.

ECO mode brings standby draw down to one watt when no load above fifteen watts is present, against ten watts in normal operation. The unit wakes briefly every 2.5 seconds to check, an adjustable interval. On a boat or motorhome left in port over winter, the saving runs to tens of amp-hours a week.

The VE.Direct port allows configuration of low-voltage alarm and cut-off thresholds, load-dependent dynamic cut-off, output voltage from 210 to 245 volts and frequency at 50 or 60 hertz, via a Bluetooth dongle or a USB cable. On paper the Ampeak 2000 W claims twice the power for less money. In practice it is a modified sine unit whose real continuous output depends heavily on ventilation and battery voltage, and it is unsuitable for sensitive appliances. The Victron addresses people fitting a permanent installation: ECO mode, the five-year warranty and signal quality justify themselves there, far less so for occasional use out of a boot. For more modest needs, the Phoenix 12/500 offers the same qualities at reduced power.

A thousand watts is the threshold at which an inverter stops being a stopgap and becomes a genuine onboard supply. Below it you charge appliances; at this level you run a coffee machine, an entry-level microwave, an angle grinder or a compressor fridge without thinking. The 2200 watt peak matters as much as the nominal rating: it absorbs the inrush current of a motor starting, the very moment when many cheap inverters simply shut down on protection. The Phoenix produces a pure sine wave through a toroidal transformer, an old but proven topology Victron has not abandoned in favour of lighter electronics. That explains the 7.4 kilos, and it also explains the reputation for reliability these units enjoy on boats that vibrate and motorhomes that get hot. ECO mode remains, as across the range, the argument buyers underestimate and then come to appreciate: one watt of standby instead of ten adds up to over two hundred watt-hours saved per week on an installation left connected. The VE.Direct port gives access to low-voltage cut-off thresholds, load-dependent dynamic cut-off, output voltage and frequency. Two reservations. Price first: at around two hundred and fifty euros on the continent it costs more than a modified sine unit rated at 2000 watts, and you need to understand why to accept that. Then battery sizing: 1000 watts out means nearly 90 amps drawn at 12 volts. A 100 amp-hour lead-acid battery will last only about thirty minutes at full load, and you need heavy-gauge cable up to the 25 square millimetre screw terminals.
