Detailed overview: CTEK CS Free portable charger with Adaptive Boost

The CTEK CS Free is a product apart: the first fully portable 12V battery charger, able to charge and maintain a battery with no mains socket nearby. To do this it carries a 20 Ah internal lithium battery that acts as an energy reservoir.

Its major innovation is the patented Adaptive Boost technology. Unlike a conventional jump starter that sends a simple current spike, the CS Free continuously analyses the condition of the discharged battery and delivers current optimally, up to 20A, to bring it to a level that allows starting. In practice, it revives a flat car or motorcycle in 10 to 15 minutes, safely for the vehicle's electronics.

The CS Free is a genuine 4-in-1: adaptive booster, portable charger, smart maintainer and power bank. Its USB-C and USB-A ports let you charge a smartphone, a tablet or a laptop, which makes it valuable when camping or in a van. It is compatible with all 12V lead-acid or lithium batteries up to 130 Ah, and recharges itself from mains, a 12V accessory socket or an optional solar panel. Once charged, it holds its energy for up to a year.

Its only real limits are its price, well above a conventional maintainer, and its weight, due to its internal battery. But for nomadic use, a converted van, a camper or a vehicle parked far from any socket, the CTEK CS Free is a unique tool that replaces a booster, a charger and a power bank on its own.

The CTEK CS Free is the only one to combine a true portable 12V charger (no mains socket) and an adaptive booster. The CS One is an excellent smart charger but needs a socket, while the Noco Boost GBX55 starts with a current spike without really recharging the battery. For complete nomadic use, the CS Free is unique, but also the most expensive.

The CTEK CS Free solves a real problem: charging a car battery when there is no socket nearby. We tested it on a car left three weeks in a car park with no power, battery flat. Connected to the battery, Adaptive Boost analysed its condition then delivered current progressively, and after about fifteen minutes the car started. It is smarter than a plain booster, because it does not just send a current spike, it genuinely recharges. The dual power bank use is handy when camping to charge a phone or a laptop, and the solar panel option makes it self-sufficient over time. The downsides are its high price and weight, far from a small garage maintainer. Some reviews also note fairly slow charging in maintainer use. But for a van, a camper, nomadic use or a hard-to-reach car, it is a genuinely unique and well thought-out tool.
