Laptop batteries

A laptop that no longer lasts an hour is not finished: its battery has simply aged, and it is the cheapest part to replace.

A laptop battery loses around 20 per cent of its capacity after 500 cycles, that is two to three years of daily use. Windows and macOS both report this health figure, and below 80 per cent replacement starts to pay off. The deciding number is not milliamp-hours but watt-hours, the only unit comparable across models since voltage varies. Watch the exact part number: one commercial model may carry batteries of different voltages depending on the year, and fitting the wrong voltage damages the mainboard. We give the capacity we actually measured and the compatible references we verified.

Green Cell HP CS03XL battery

See price and availability (10)

An internal battery in the original format for HP EliteBook G3 machines: 3400 mAh, 39 Wh of Li-polymer, and a two-year manufacturer warranty.

  • Capacity: 3400 mAh (11.4 V, about 39 Wh)
  • Fits: HP EliteBook 745, 755, 840, 848 and 850 G3, ZBook 15u G3
  • Cells: Li-polymer
  • Safety: Overcharge and deep-discharge protection
  • Original CS03XL reference, two-year warranty
HP EliteBook 840 G3 laptops and their siblings remain solid business machines, but their internal battery eventually stops lasting the morning. This Green Cell CS03XL matches HP's own part reference, also listed as 800513-001, 800231-141, HSTNN-DB6U and HSTNN-IB6Y: 3400 mAh at 11.4 V, about 39 Wh of Li-polymer, with the expected protection circuits. It covers EliteBook 745, 755, 840, 848 and 850 in G3 form, plus the ZBook 15u G3. Unlike the Inspiron range, the battery here is internal: the base has to come off, a simple job that nonetheless calls for a Torx screwdriver.
The EliteBook 840 G3 is exactly the sort of machine people keep for years: solid chassis, excellent keyboard, still enough performance for office work and the web. Its battery, though, has aged, and that is often the only thing standing in the way of keeping it. This Green Cell fixes precisely that for around thirty pounds, against several hundred for a replacement machine. The flat 39 Wh Li-polymer format is the original one, so you get the starting runtime back, four to six hours depending on use. One important practical difference from the Inspiron range: the battery here is internal. You turn the machine over, remove the Torx screws from the base, disconnect the ribbon cable and swap the pack. Nothing complicated, about fifteen minutes, but it is not a tool-free job. What made us pick this reference over an anonymous pack is the two-year manufacturer warranty and the identified cells: on an internal battery that is hard to inspect, a careful protection circuit matters even more. Do watch the generations, though: the CS03XL targets G3 models, not the CM03XL packs of the G1 and G2.

Green Cell Dell M5Y1K battery

See price and availability (9)

Giving a tired Dell Inspiron 15 another day of runtime without replacing the machine: 2200 mAh, four cells and a two-year warranty.

  • Capacity: 2200 mAh (14.8 V, about 33 Wh)
  • Fits: Dell Inspiron 14, 15 and 17 (3000 and 5000 series)
  • Cells: 4 Li-ion cells
  • Safety: Overcharge and deep-discharge protection
  • Original M5Y1K reference, two-year warranty
When the original battery in a Dell Inspiron only lasts an hour, replacing it costs around thirty pounds and saves a laptop that is otherwise perfectly usable. This Green Cell M5Y1K matches Dell's own part reference: 2200 mAh at 14.8 V, about 33 Wh across four Li-ion cells, with electronic protection against overcharge and deep discharge. It targets Inspiron 14, 15 and 17 machines in the 3000 and 5000 series, along with several Vostro and Latitude models. The Polish manufacturer backs it with a two-year warranty, still rare in a market dominated by anonymous sellers.
Replacing a laptop battery is one of the few jobs that genuinely extends a machine's life for a trivial cost, and that is exactly this Green Cell's territory. On a 2015 Inspiron 15 that barely lasted an hour, you get back half a day of office work, enough to push the replacement back by several years. Fitting is done from underneath, the battery being removable on most affected Inspiron models, with no need to open the base. What separates Green Cell from the countless unbranded packs is traceability: identified cells, stated protection circuits, a two-year warranty and a European manufacturer you can actually reach. On a product whose real risk is a cut-price protection board, that is worth the few pounds' difference. Two things to know before ordering. First the capacity: 2200 mAh is the original four-cell format, not a high-capacity pack, so expect no more than the machine had when new. Second the reference: the Inspiron range used several different batteries, so read M5Y1K on the old label before confirming.

The part number is on the battery label itself, as a code such as A2519 or L19M4PDB. If it is internal, look for the machine's serial number, often under the chassis, and query the manufacturer's site. The marketing name alone is never enough: a single range can include ten different batteries.

Yes, plugged into the mains, as long as the adapter supplies enough power. Two caveats: on some models performance is throttled without a battery, because the processor can no longer draw on the buffer for its consumption peaks, and the slightest power blip causes an abrupt shutdown.

On Windows, the powercfg /batteryreport command generates an HTML report comparing design capacity with actual capacity. On macOS the information sits in System Settings, Battery, Health. On Linux, upower -i is enough. A gap of more than 20 per cent between the two values signals a replacement in the near term.

It is not ideal, but recent machines handle it: they stop charging at 80 per cent when they detect sedentary use. If your laptop lacks that feature, unplug it now and then, and above all avoid leaving it at 100 per cent in a warm environment, which is the worst-case scenario.

300 to 500 full cycles, so two to four years depending on how hard you use it. Manufacturers consider a battery end of life below 80 per cent of its original capacity. A laptop that goes from 8 hours to 3 hours of runtime in two years is following a perfectly normal curve.

Yes on most models, with the right screwdriver and a plastic spudger. The difficulties come from Torx or Pentalobe screws, the clipped cover and the adhesive under the battery, particularly stubborn on Apple machines. Run the machine below 25 per cent before starting: a punctured full battery is a fire risk.
