A laptop battery loses around 20 per cent of its capacity after 500 cycles, that is two to three years of daily use. Windows and macOS both report this health figure, and below 80 per cent replacement starts to pay off. The deciding number is not milliamp-hours but watt-hours, the only unit comparable across models since voltage varies. Watch the exact part number: one commercial model may carry batteries of different voltages depending on the year, and fitting the wrong voltage damages the mainboard. We give the capacity we actually measured and the compatible references we verified.

Unlike the Inspiron range, the battery here is internal: the base has to come off, a simple job that nonetheless calls for a Torx screwdriver.
The EliteBook 840 G3 is exactly the sort of machine people keep for years: solid chassis, excellent keyboard, still enough performance for office work and the web. Its battery, though, has aged, and that is often the only thing standing in the way of keeping it. This Green Cell fixes precisely that for around thirty pounds, against several hundred for a replacement machine. The part number is on the battery label itself, as a code such as A2519 or L19M4PDB. If it is internal, look for the machine's serial number, often under the chassis, and query the manufacturer's site. The marketing name alone is never enough: a single range can include ten different batteries.

Yes, plugged into the mains, as long as the adapter supplies enough power. Two caveats: on some models performance is throttled without a battery, because the processor can no longer draw on the buffer for its consumption peaks, and the slightest power blip causes an abrupt shutdown.
