A power station (or portable power station) is a large portable battery fitted with real 230V mains sockets, USB ports and often a solar input. Unlike a power bank, it is built to run demanding devices: a fridge, a kettle, power tools, a laptop, or even an entire home during an outage. The market has matured a lot over the past two years, and there is now a genuinely good model for every budget, from a 250 € emergency top-up to a multi-thousand-euro backup centre.

With 268 Wh and 600 W continuous (1200 W peak thanks to Power Lifting), it easily runs a cool box, LED lighting, a home router, or charges a laptop and smartphones. For anyone who needs real capacity without breaking the bank or their back, the Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 is our mid-range favourite. With 2042 Wh and 17.5 kg, it weighs roughly 41 percent less than a typical station of the same capacity, a difference that changes everything in daily use. Wh, W, LiFePO4: the criteria that actually matter

Two numbers sum up what matters about a power station: watt-hours (Wh), which measure how much energy it stores (its reserve), and watts (W), which measure the instantaneous power it can deliver (what it can run). A 500 Wh, 2000 W station can power a demanding appliance, but not for long; a 4000 Wh, 500 W station will last a long time but will refuse a heavy appliance. The right choice therefore depends as much on your use case as on your budget.
