Picking a portable power station at random means risking overpaying for capacity you will never use, or worse, running out at the wrong moment. This tool works the other way round: it starts from your real need. You build a list of your devices (fridge, internet router, laptop, lighting, tools…), state how many hours a day and over how many days you want to run them, and we work out the energy to store, expressed in watt-hours (Wh), the unit that really matters for a station.
Our method
- We start from each device’s typical power draw (in watts) and its running time to get its daily consumption.
- We add up every device, then apply a realistic efficiency: a battery never delivers 100 % of its rated capacity (inverter losses, heat, conversion). The result is therefore a cautious estimate, closer to reality than a purely theoretical figure.
- We also check peak power: a station may have enough energy but not enough output watts to start a large motor or a heating element. The models we suggest meet both constraints.

Reading the result correctly
Two figures matter: capacity (in Wh), which tells you how long you will last, and output power (in W), which tells you what you can plug in at once. A 1000 Wh station can run a low-consumption fridge all night, but will not drive a 2000 W space heater, even for a few minutes. Our calculation accounts for both.
A few habits noticeably extend real runtime: favour direct-current devices (USB, 12 V) that avoid inverter losses, group power-hungry uses while the battery is full, and remember that cold temporarily lowers the available capacity. If your need grows, several modular stations or one station expandable with add-on batteries often cost less than a single very large model.
