How long will your power station last?

The real runtime, worked out from the energy the station actually returns.

Dividing the advertised watt-hours by the appliance's power gives too optimistic a result: a station never returns its full capacity, and the shortfall varies with the output used. The mains socket runs through the inverter, whose conversion sheds heat; the 12 V and USB-C outputs skip that stage and return noticeably more.

This tool therefore starts from the energy actually available. For 32 stations in the catalogue it uses the ratio measured in our review rather than an estimate, and labels it "measured". For the others it applies 0.85 on the mains socket and 0.92 on the DC outputs.

On the mains socket we apply the ratio measured in our review where we have one, otherwise 0.85. On the 12 V and USB-C outputs, that ratio raised by 8 % and capped at 0.95, otherwise 0.92: those outputs skip the inverter conversion stage. The 8 % gain is the low end of what we observe, which reaches 19 % on some models.

The calculation assumes a constant draw. An appliance that cycles, such as a fridge, averages far less than its rated power: count on roughly a third of the time running.
