The Victron brand is a benchmark in the off-grid world, and this model is a good example: in a van or RV setup, it really gets the most from the panels thanks to its MPPT technology, with efficiency you can feel over a plain PWM controller, especially under hazy skies. The built-in Bluetooth is a real everyday plus: from the VictronConnect app, you track solar output in real time, check the history and adjust charge settings without a single cable. The build quality inspires confidence for an installation meant to last years. Its only downsides are a price above budget Chinese controllers, and the need to size the model (100/20) correctly for your solar power. It also has no physical screen, so reading anything without a smartphone nearby means relying on the status LEDs alone, and availability can vary noticeably between retailers. But for a reliable, durable installation, Victron remains the safe bet.

The BMV-712 Smart is Victron's reference battery monitor: a 500 A/50 mV shunt paired with a dedicated backlit LCD display, showing voltage, current, state of charge and remaining runtime at a glance, no phone required. Built-in Bluetooth also lets you run everything from the VictronConnect app, and an AUX input adds monitoring of a second battery, midpoint voltage or temperature.
We fitted this BMV-712 Smart to the auxiliary battery bank of a converted van, after years of relying on a plain voltmeter that told us little. The shunt bolts onto the negative terminal, and the round display sits on the dashboard thanks to the supplied 10 metre RJ12 cable, plenty long enough that no extension was needed. Once the battery had been calibrated through a first full cycle, the percentage and amp-hour readout matched reality closely, and a glance at the dial was enough to know whether there was enough left for the night. Bluetooth takes over the moment more detail is wanted: discharge history, alarm thresholds, all configurable from VictronConnect within minutes. We also wired the AUX input to the starter battery, handy for keeping an eye on both from one unit. Two small gripes: the shunt terminals take very heavy cable (M10), proper lugs are needed, and the display, while readable, is modest next to a phone screen. For a permanent physical readout on the dashboard, this monitor remains the reference.

We fitted this SmartShunt to a lithium leisure battery, drawn to the idea of not needing any physical display at all: everything runs through Bluetooth and the VictronConnect app. Pairing is instant (the PIN code is printed right on the housing), and the app shows state of charge, estimated time remaining, discharge history and plenty more within seconds, with real depth of detail. The IP65 housing is reassuring in a damp battery compartment or on a boat. Over time, readings stayed consistent against a reference multimeter, and the Bluetooth link never once proved flaky, even from a room away. The only real downsides: you absolutely need a phone nearby to check anything, there's no backup screen, and early firmware updates stalled part-way through for some users. For anyone happy to run everything from the app, the SmartShunt remains a benchmark that's hard to beat in this category.

You fit the Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 Isolated for one specific reason: to electrically separate the leisure battery from a starter battery whose ground cannot safely be tied to it, typically a converted van whose onboard electronics are sensitive to interference. Once wired in, the unit charges the leisure battery at up to 30A while driving, which on a 100 to 200Ah lithium bank makes a real difference over a simple split-charge relay. The VictronConnect app is genuinely pleasant to use: pick the battery profile, set the engine-detection threshold, and watch the charge in real time from the passenger seat. The casing runs properly hot at full power, which is expected given the conversion involved, but it is worth planning a bit of ventilation if it is mounted inside a closed locker. The price sits a step above a basic battery isolator, and it is worth checking you genuinely need the isolated version: the cheaper non-isolated model is plenty if the two battery grounds are already common. For a van or a boat with two separate circuits, though, this is exactly the right tool, reliable and well thought out.

A thousand watts is the threshold at which an inverter stops being a stopgap and becomes a genuine onboard supply. Below it you charge appliances; at this level you run a coffee machine, an entry-level microwave, an angle grinder or a compressor fridge without thinking. The 2200 watt peak matters as much as the nominal rating: it absorbs the inrush current of a motor starting, the very moment when many cheap inverters simply shut down on protection. The Phoenix 12/500 VE.Direct is the entry model in Victron Energy's inverter range, from a Dutch manufacturer whose equipment is found on boats, motorhomes and off-grid installations alike. It delivers 400 watts continuous at 25 °C and absorbs 900 watt peaks, in genuine pure sine wave. Its ECO mode drops it to standby at a single watt when nothing is plugged in, and its VE.Direct port lets you configure and monitor it from a phone.
There are two families of 12 volt inverter, and the difference is not obvious in a shop. Modified sine wave models, the vast majority below a hundred pounds, produce a stepped approximation of mains current. That is fine for a lamp or a drill, but it makes transformers hum, motors run hotter and upsets some switched-mode power supplies. The Phoenix 12/500 belongs to the other family: it produces a genuine sine wave, indistinguishable from a wall socket, so it can run a medical device, a sewing machine, a tool charger or a computer power supply without reservation. The second thing that sets it apart is ECO mode. A conventional inverter draws current permanently, often five to ten watts, even with nothing plugged in: on a motorhome battery that empties a hundred amp-hours in a few weeks. The Phoenix instead drops to one watt on standby and wakes as soon as a load above fifteen watts appears. On an installation left permanently connected, that detail is the difference between a battery still charged in spring and a dead one. The VE.Direct port completes the picture: with a Bluetooth dongle you set the low-voltage cut-off thresholds, the output voltage and ECO mode from a phone. Two honest limits. We fitted this Phoenix 24/1600 Smart to a 24 volt service bank, curious about what really changes when you move up from our usual 12V setups. First observation: for the same power, the current drawn from the battery is half what it would be at 12V, which noticeably eases the cable gauge needed up to the M8 terminals. The built-in Bluetooth delivers on its promise: instant pairing with VictronConnect, settings reachable in a few taps, including the ECO mode threshold we had to raise to stop it cutting power to a small charger left plugged in. The pure sine output caused no trouble at all, even with a small compressor that is normally hard to start. The steel enclosure feels reassuring, but its 12 kilos are worth planning for when mounting it. Only real drawback: unlike the VE.Bus Compact version, a touch cheaper and lighter, this Smart model cannot be run in parallel or three-phase, a limit worth knowing if the installation might grow later. For a standalone 24V setup, it is hard to beat at this price point.
