MPPT efficiency and a more generous rating than the BlueSolar
The SmartSolar 100/20 shares its charging electronics and MPPT algorithm with the BlueSolar 75/15: charging performance data from one applies to the other. The difference lies in the rating (100V input instead of 75V, 20A instead of 15A) and in 48V compatibility, absent from the BlueSolar.
As with the BlueSolar, an apparent fault can actually come from cheap MC4 connectors failing upstream, on the installation itself, rather than from the controller: a point worth checking before blaming the unit.
Built-in Bluetooth, the real difference from the BlueSolar
This is what justifies the price gap with the BlueSolar: the SmartSolar comes with Bluetooth built in as standard, with no dongle to add. The VictronConnect app displays output in real time, keeps a 30 day history, and lets you adjust all charge parameters from a smartphone. There is no physical screen on the unit itself: without a smartphone nearby, only status LEDs give a basic indication of how it is operating.
Battery compatibility and one technical point worth knowing
The SmartSolar 100/20 is compatible with lead-acid batteries (gel, AGM, flooded) and lithium, via configurable charge profiles and the BatteryLife function. As with the BlueSolar, automatic detection of the system voltage only runs on the very first installation and then locks: moving the unit to a system of a different voltage requires a manual reset through the app. The default lithium preset, with a 2h absorption time, exceeds the actual need of a generic LFP battery, which reaches its absorption threshold faster: it is best to shorten it manually through the app.
Safety and reliability
Reverse polarity protection, standard across the Victron range, relies on a resettable circuit rather than a single-use fuse: it stays effective even after several wiring mistakes. The Victron MPPT range benefits from an established reputation for reliability in the off-grid sector, backed by a long-standing presence in this market. The IP43 protection rating places the unit in a sheltered installation, not in direct outdoor exposure.
Price and availability
The price observed generally sits between €90 and €110 depending on the retailer, a clear step above the BlueSolar 75/15. Availability varies significantly from one retailer to another, with some partner links becoming unavailable without notice: it is advisable to check stock at the time of purchase rather than rely on a single source. No product recall was found for this model in the American and European safety databases consulted.
