The UMS4 is the charger we keep on the bench when juggling a lot of cells. Four bays, a large and very complete LCD screen that shows, for each cell, voltage, current, charged capacity, type and health, and fast charging that reaches up to 3A on one bay with a Quick Charge adapter. It swallows the 18650, 21700 and 26650 cells of torches without complaint, and also takes AA and AAA NiMH. We like its simplicity: one USB source, and everything reads at a glance. Two honest reservations: you need a good QC adapter to get the full 4A total, and there is no clean cut-off without unplugging. But for charging and monitoring four cells at once, it remains a safe bet.

The Nitecore IntelliCharger i2 is certainly not the newest or most sophisticated battery charger, but after testing more than 10 chargers of different brands and formats, our team kept this one for its simplicity and durability. It recharges the most common rechargeable formats without any trouble. Extremely solid and long-lasting (we have been using one at the office almost daily since 2014, and it still works without a hitch despite several drops). Protected against overheating and reverse polarity, it stops automatically when the cell is charged or after 10 hours of charging. We also appreciate that it can be powered via a car cigarette-lighter cable, which makes it even more versatile. In short, it only has small LEDs to show charging progress rather than a fancy LCD screen, it is rather rustic, but it is far better and less temperamental than most mains chargers on the market.

We took the Nitecore NB10000 hiking and travelling, and its knockout argument is the weight: 150 g, you literally forget it in the bag. For anyone counting grams on a trek or bikepacking trip, it is a real game-changer, especially as the 10,000 mAh capacity is plenty to last several days with a phone. The carbon fibre body inspires confidence: after a few knocks and a downpour, it looks brand new, and the woven finish is gorgeous. When charging, the 20 W over USB-C top up a smartphone at a good pace, and being able to plug in two devices at once is handy. The low-power mode is clever for charging a watch or earbuds without the battery cutting out. Two honest reservations: the power stays moderate (not enough to charge a big laptop at full speed), and the ultra-thin format, very pleasant, makes it a little slippery. But for a light, tough, reliable outdoor power bank, the NB10000 remains a hard-to-beat benchmark.

The Pocket 10000 pulls off a neat feat: fitting 10,000 mAh and a built-in USB-C cable into a 12.5 mm body barely bigger than a card, for 160 g. The woven carbon fibre is gorgeous and reassuring, and the idea of a cable tucked into the edge is excellent: no more hunting for a cord, you unfold it and plug in. The 22.5 W is enough to recharge a smartphone at a good pace, and you can power two devices at once through the cable and the USB-C port. The IP65 rating reassures in the rain, and the low-current mode is perfect for earbuds. Two honest reservations: the power stays tuned for smartphones and tablets, not for charging a laptop at full speed, and the price can climb depending on the seller, so it pays to compare. But for a slim, elegant and genuinely well-thought-out pocket bank, it is among the best.

The NB20000 Gen 3 is the bank we grab without hesitation for hiking or travel, when every gram counts. Its killer argument is the capacity-to-weight ratio: 20,000 mAh for just 291 g, where a conventional bank of the same capacity often weighs 350 to 450 g. The woven carbon-fiber body is gorgeous, light and reassuring, and the IPX5 rating means no panic in a shower. The two USB-C ports are handy for charging a phone and a watch at once, and pass-through lets you recharge the bank while powering a device. Its 72 Wh keep it under the airline limit, a real plus for travel. Two honest reservations: the 22.5 W output is enough for smartphones, tablets and small devices, but not to charge a laptop at full speed, and the lack of a USB-A port means everything goes through USB-C. For the outdoors and light travel, it remains a benchmark that is hard to beat.

The Carbon 6K is a product apart: it is not the most powerful power bank, but it is one of the lightest and toughest we have handled. At 88 g for 6000 mAh, in a woven carbon-fiber shell, it disappears at the bottom of a trail pack or a pocket. The IP68 rating, which allows submersion to 2 metres, makes it at home in the rain, on a kayak or in a cave. We like its dual function: on top of topping up a phone or a watch over USB-C, it extends the runtime of Nitecore 6K headlamps on long night outings. Two honest reservations: the 10 W output is modest, this is a backup battery rather than a fast charger, and like any cell of this type, the usable capacity is below the advertised 6000 mAh (real-world useful energy is closer to 3500-4000 mAh at 5 V). But for pure lightness and toughness, it is hard to beat.

The NWL30 is one of those objects that quickly earn a spot in the car boot or the bivouac bag. On paper, the 3-in-1 smells of gimmick, but in use each function holds up. The 3000-lumen output is genuinely powerful for a light this size, and the stepless colour-temperature adjustment, from warm white to cool white, is a real pleasure for switching from a dinner-table mood to true work lighting. The 18,000 mAh battery gives solid runtime and does a real job as a backup power bank, with its USB-C and USB-A outputs. The mosquito-repelling function does the job on summer evenings. We also like the red signalling light and the rugged build. Two reservations: at 515 g it is not ultralight, and its price places it above a simple lantern. But for anyone who wants a single object that lights up, recharges and repels mosquitoes, it is very convincing.

We loved the Nitecore LR70 for its Swiss-army-knife take on light. Hiking or camping, having in a single object a torch that can light up 300 m away and a mood lantern that glows at 360° genuinely changes things: you light the path, then set the device down in the tent for a warm, pleasant light, without carrying two accessories. The 3000 lumens in Turbo are stunning for the size, and the lantern modes (soft white, plus red, SOS and beacon) are perfect at a bivouac or in a pinch. The power-bank function is the third asset: the 10,000 mAh recharge a smartphone over USB-C, enough to save the day when things get tricky. The build inspires confidence, IP67 waterproof and impact-resistant, and USB-C charging is handy. Two honest nuances: at full power, the runtime drops fast (Turbo is made for short bursts), and at 271 g it is not the lightest accessory. But for anyone wanting a single device that lights up strongly, illuminates a camp and rescues phones, the LR70 is a versatile success.

We slipped the NL169R into a small tactical torch and into an alarm unit tested outdoors: in both cases, the built-in USB-C port changed the game, no more carrying a tiny charger that's easy to lose. The rated 950 mAh holds up in real use, well above the 650 mAh of older versions of the same format. One thing to watch: its 3.6V voltage exceeds that of a standard CR123A (3V), and an old film camera tested with it didn't take kindly to the extra voltage, so it's worth checking compatibility before using it in older or sensitive gear. For a modern tactical torch or security device, though, it's a genuinely handy rechargeable cell for everyday use.

We fitted several torches with the NL1834R, and the built-in USB-C port genuinely changes daily use: no more digging through a bag for a dedicated charger, a standard USB-C cable is enough, your phone's will do fine. The clearly visible charge LED avoids any nasty surprises. On runtime, the rated 3400 mAh holds up on a hiking torch used several evenings in a row before needing a recharge. One drawback worth noting: charging through the built-in port is slower than a fast desktop charger, which can matter in an emergency. The Button Top format (71 mm) is also slightly longer than a standard Flat Top 18650, worth checking against your torch before buying. For everyday nomadic use, this is clearly our favourite 18650 right now.

We put the NES1200 through its paces for motorhome and home backup use, and its 1200 W continuous output delivers on its promise: coffee machine, mini oven, power tools, everything runs without a hitch, and the 2200 W surge soaks up the inrush current of motor-driven appliances. The seven simultaneous outputs avoid the usual tangle of extension leads, a genuine day-to-day comfort. At 10.65 kg it moves easily from room to room or from the boot to the motorhome, even if it is still too heavy for a backpack. Two honest gripes: mains recharging takes close to 8.5 hours, slow next to recent LiFePO4 stations that refill in about an hour, and this model has become hard to find at European retailers, as Nitecore has since refocused its range on power banks. We tested the NL2160 in a high-power search light, the kind of device that drains a battery in one evening: the runtime gain over a standard 4000 or 5000 mAh 21700 is noticeable straight away, almost an extra evening before recharging. The IPX6 rating also proved itself on an outing in the rain, without a shred of worry for the torch's electronics. One minor drawback: with no built-in USB port, you need an external 21700-compatible charger, and its slightly above-average diameter kept it from fitting into an older cell holder that was supposedly built for this format, so it's worth checking compatibility before buying. For anyone after the biggest protected 21700 capacity around right now, it's hard to beat.
