Detailed overview: Makita 40V XGT 8.0Ah battery
The BL4080H is the most powerful 40V max XGT battery in the Makita lineup, built for tools that place heavy demands on their power source: chainsaws, grinders, rotary hammers, and other machines run continuously on site. Its 8.0Ah (288Wh) capacity matches the standard BL4080F, but the internal technology changes everything: so-called "Tabless" cells, which remove the traditional connecting tabs between electrodes to let current flow more freely.
The result Makita claims: up to 35% more continuous power than the BL4080F, and operation up to 32% cooler under sustained heavy load. On power-hungry tools (chainsaws, blowers, large-diameter grinders), that thermal headroom translates into power that holds up better over time, without the drop-off caused by overheat protection kicking in.
A full charge takes 76 minutes or less with a DC40RA or DC40RB rapid charger. A 4-LED charge indicator, activated with a simple press, lets you check the charge level without clipping the battery onto a tool. Digital communication between the battery and the machine continuously optimizes power delivery, and a protection system constantly monitors the risk of overload, over-discharge, and overheating.
On the durability side, the reinforced casing and rigid rails keep the battery firmly secured to the tool even under heavy use, and water and impact resistance have been improved compared to earlier XGT batteries. At 1.8kg on the scale, it's even slightly lighter than the BL4080F (1.9kg), despite its higher power output.
This battery remains compatible with the entire 40V max XGT system, including the most demanding dual-battery tools. It's aimed mainly at professionals and heavy users who already own XGT tools and want to push the power and runtime limits of their system further, rather than at a first XGT purchase: the cheaper standard BL4080F is more than enough for everyday use.

Our tester's review: Yoni Marchal-Laporte
We tested the BL4080H on an XGT chainsaw during an extended firewood session, about as demanding as it gets for a 40V battery. The difference against a standard BL4080F shows up clearly after 15 to 20 minutes of continuous cutting: power doesn't taper off, and the casing stays noticeably cooler to the touch by the end of the session. The 76 minute full charge with the DC40RA is also welcome when jobs stack up on site. One caveat: at this price, it's really an investment for owners of power hungry XGT tools already in their kit, occasional users won't see much benefit over the considerably cheaper BL4080F. Review numbers are still thin since this is a recent release, but Makita's reputation for XGT pack reliability is solid. For heavy professional use, it's clearly our pick in the 8Ah class.
Frequently asked questions: Makita 40V XGT 8.0Ah battery
Both batteries share the same 8.0Ah (288Wh) capacity, but the BL4080H uses Tabless cells that deliver up to 35% more continuous power and run up to 32% cooler than the BL4080F, for sustained heavy use.
Yes, it works across the entire 40V max XGT system, including dual-battery tools that combine two packs for extra power. It is not compatible with the 18V LXT or 12V CXT ranges, which use a different mount.
76 minutes or less with a DC40RA or DC40RB rapid charger. With an older XGT charger that lacks rapid charging, expect a noticeably longer charge time.
For occasional use, the cheaper BL4080F is more than enough. The BL4080H earns its price on power hungry tools (chainsaw, grinder, blower) run continuously, where its extra power and better heat management really matter.
