Detailed overview: CTEK MXS 5.0 12V 5A battery charger
The CTEK MXS 5.0 has built itself a reputation as a benchmark battery charger, and it is well earned. Developed in Sweden, this fully automatic smart charger takes care of everything: just plug it into the mains, choose the right mode (small battery or motorcycle, car, AGM, or winter Recond mode) and connect it to the battery, and it then manages the charge on its own, safely.
It delivers 0.8 A or 5 A at 12 V and suits all lead-acid batteries from 1.2 to 110 Ah (maintenance up to 160 Ah): flooded, AGM and gel. Charging is done in 8 stages, with an initial diagnosis, desulphation and a reconditioning mode able to recover stratified or deeply discharged batteries, plus automatic temperature compensation to stay effective in both extreme cold and heat.
On safety, it is dust- and splash-proof (IP65), protected against reverse polarity and short circuits, and spark-free: you can connect it without worry, even to the sensitive electronics of a modern vehicle. Compact (168 x 65 x 38 mm, around 0.6 kg) and made in Sweden, it comes with a 5-year warranty. To maintain a car, motorcycle, boat or a vehicle in winter storage, it is a safe choice.

Comparison
At around £77 to £86, the CTEK MXS 5.0 compares with the most sought-after smart charger-maintainers, through searches such as "best car battery charger" or "motorcycle battery maintainer". Here is how it sits against three alternatives: the NOCO Genius5, the Bosch C3 and the Optimate 4 Dual.
| Criterion | CTEK MXS 5.0 | NOCO Genius5 | Bosch C3 | Optimate 4 Dual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Charge current | 0.8 / 5 A | 5 A | 3.8 A | 0.8 A |
| Battery capacity | 1.2 to 110 Ah | Up to 120 Ah | 1.2 to 120 Ah | Up to 75 Ah |
| Lithium compatible | No | Yes | No | No |
| Reconditioning | Yes | Yes | No | Yes |
| Observed price | ≈ £86 | ≈ £68 | ≈ £47 | ≈ £64 |
In short, the CTEK MXS 5.0 stands out for its legendary reliability, its 5-year warranty, its effective reconditioning mode and its temperature compensation. The NOCO Genius5 is its most serious rival, a little cheaper and lithium compatible; the Bosch C3 is more affordable for occasional use, but less complete; the Optimate 4 mainly targets motorcycles. To maintain lead-acid, AGM or gel batteries in a car, motorcycle or boat over the long term with a rugged unit, the CTEK MXS 5.0 remains a safe benchmark.
Our tester's review: Christophe Delpuech
We have used the CTEK MXS 5.0 for years to maintain the batteries of cars and motorcycles that sit through winter, and it has never let us down. Plug it in, choose the mode, and forget it: it does the rest, unattended, and switches off on its own once the optimal charge is reached. The reconditioning mode even saved us a motorcycle battery we thought was dead after a long lay-up. It is dead simple to use, the clamps and the permanent M8 eyelet are handy, and the IP65 sealing lets you leave it connected in the garage without worry. The only small downside is the price, a little above an entry-level charger, but the reliability, safety and 5-year warranty more than justify it. For anyone who wants a charger that lasts and looks after their batteries, it is the benchmark.
Frequently asked questions: CTEK MXS 5.0 12V 5A battery charger
Yes, to a large extent. Its reconditioning mode and its ability to start charging at low voltage let it recover deeply discharged or stratified batteries. A truly dead battery (with a short-circuited cell) remains beyond recovery, however.
All 12 V lead-acid batteries from 1.2 to 110 Ah (maintenance up to 160 Ah): flooded, AGM and gel. It offers dedicated modes (small battery or motorcycle, car, AGM) and a winter mode. It does not charge lithium (LiFePO4) batteries.
Yes. Once charging is complete, it switches to maintenance (float charge) and monitors the battery without overcharging it. IP65 sealed, it can stay connected all winter on a vehicle in storage, in the garage.
Yes. It produces no spark, is protected against reverse polarity and short circuits, and delivers a stable voltage. You can connect it directly to the battery of a modern vehicle with no risk to its electronics.
