Detailed overview: Noco GB50 1500A jump starter
The Noco GB50 Boost XL is a lithium emergency jump starter rated at 1500 peak amps at 12 volts. It sits in the middle of the Boost range and targets the vehicles the entry models no longer cover: family saloons, SUVs, MPVs and small vans, in petrol as much as in diesel.
The manufacturer's approved figures are clear: petrol engines up to 7.0 litres and diesel engines up to 4.5 litres, with a completely flat battery, no second vehicle and no jump leads. It is the diesel threshold that matters most in Europe, where oil burners still dominate the mid-capacity fleet. Noco quotes up to thirty jump starts from a single charge, and the unit holds its reserve for several months at rest.
UltraSafe technology is identical to the rest of the range and remains its main argument against conventional leads. The clamps stay inert until the connection is correct, which removes any risk of a spark on a battery venting hydrogen, and reverse polarity is detected and blocked before any damage reaches the onboard electronics.
The enclosure is IP65 rated, protected against dust and water jets, with an over-moulded rubber shell that survives falling off a workbench. The built-in LED torch climbs here to 200 lumens across seven modes including SOS and strobe, double that of the GB20 and GB40. A 2.1 amp USB port rescues a phone, and charging goes in through 10 W USB-C.
If you only own a small petrol car or a motorcycle, the Noco GB20 Boost Sport does the job for far less. Conversely, for a large diesel above 4.5 litres or a heavy van, you need to step up to the GB70 or the GBX75, which adds USB-C fast charging.

For a couple of euros more than the GB40, the GB50 lifts approved diesel capacity from 3.0 to 4.5 litres: that is the gap between a diesel city car and a family saloon, and it justifies the step on its own. The GB70 remains superior, but its interest begins beyond 4.5 litres of diesel, so for a van or a large SUV. As for the Gooloo GP4000, it quotes nearly three times the amps for half the money: the difference lies in certified engine capacities, build quality and brand support, not in the raw spec sheet.

The GB50 is probably the best power-to-price ratio in the Noco range, and comparing it with its immediate neighbours makes that obvious. The GB40 below stops at 1000 amps and, crucially, at 3.0 litres of diesel: enough for a diesel city car, short as soon as a family saloon or an SUV is involved. The GB70 above climbs to 2000 amps but costs some forty euros more and weighs nearly twice as much. The GB50 slots between the two with 1500 amps, diesel certified to 4.5 litres, and a price that stays within touching distance of the GB40. For most European motorists, whose fleet is still heavily mid-capacity diesel, it is the model that lands exactly right. In use, the thirty-jump-starts claim is honest: we are of course talking about successive attempts on a very weak battery, not thirty breakdowns, but what it really means is that the unit keeps reserve after rescuing a neighbour too. The torch raised to 200 lumens genuinely changes something: at 100 lumens you see your clamps, at 200 you see the engine bay. The rest is classic Noco, and that is a compliment: spark-proof clamps, reverse polarity protection, rubber-moulded IP65 shell, USB port to rescue a phone. Two reservations. Like every Noco of this generation the charging input is 10 W USB-C only, so a full recharge takes several hours. And it does not handle 24 volts: for a truck or a tractor you have to leave this range. For everything else, there is very little to hold against it.

Those are successive attempts on a very weak battery in favourable conditions. In practice the useful meaning of that figure lies elsewhere: after rescuing your own vehicle, the unit still holds plenty to rescue someone else.
