A UPS built for a specific need
Protecting a router, a broadband box or a small NAS from a mains outage or a surge does not necessarily call for a bulky UPS. The Back-UPS BX500MI answers that specific need in a compact tower format weighing around 4.5 kg, far removed from the larger desktop UPS units.
Modest runtime, not stated by the manufacturer
The BX500MI is designed to absorb a brief outage or allow a clean shutdown, not to keep a piece of equipment running for long off the mains. Where the other two Back-UPS units in this range (850 VA and Pro 650 VA) state precise runtimes in minutes according to load, APC does not give an equivalent figure for the BX500MI: only a generic indication of a few minutes at normal load appears on the product page. That is a genuine lack of transparency next to the other two units from the same brand.
Universal IEC C13 outlets, but not for every device
At 500 VA and 300 W, the BX500MI comfortably covers a router, a broadband box or a small NAS. Its 3 output sockets are all battery-backed and regulated, but exclusively in the IEC C13 format, the connector found on the back of a desktop computer or a monitor. A typical consumer device with a standard mains plug cannot be plugged in directly: you need either an IEC cord already supplied with the equipment, or an IEC-to-mains adapter. No USB charging port is offered for a phone or a tablet, unlike the two higher-end Back-UPS units in the range.
A line-interactive topology that spares the battery
The BX500MI relies on a line-interactive topology: its automatic voltage regulation (AVR) corrects mains voltage sags and surges directly, without ever switching the equipment onto the battery. On an unstable electrical supply (a campsite, a marina berth, an ageing network), this markedly reduces the number of charge and discharge cycles the battery goes through, and so extends its useful life compared with a purely standby entry-level UPS that would switch to battery at every glitch.
A PowerChute communication port, limited to Windows
Contrary to what its product page suggests, the BX500MI does include a USB communication port, distinct from a simple charging port, allowing PowerChute Personal Edition software to be installed on a connected computer. This software monitors the battery status and can trigger an automatic clean shutdown in the event of a prolonged outage. The catch: PowerChute Personal Edition only works under Windows, macOS has to rely on its native shutdown-on-power-loss feature. No screen shows the live charge status, only LEDs give a general indication.
Compact format, replaceable battery
The tower format stays very compact and fits easily into an electrical cabinet, a van or a technical cupboard. The sealed lead-acid battery is user-replaceable, which extends the UPS's useful life beyond that of its original battery, typically 3 to 5 years. The product is covered by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.

The most surprising technical detail in this trio is not where you would expect it: the BE850G2-FR, despite being positioned between the other two on price, uses a simpler standby topology, while the entry-level BX500MI already benefits from line-interactive regulation. For a tight budget and a simple protection need, the BX500MI remains a sound choice; for more outlets and USB charging for a phone, the BE850G2-FR takes over; for a control screen, the BR650MI Pro is the only one of the three to offer it.
