Hyundai DHY6000SE Diesel Generator

The Hyundai DHY6000SE sits in a category of its own within our generator selection: a genuine diesel standby unit, built for households and small businesses that need real backup power without the weight and three-phase complexity of the larger Scheppach SG5200D, and without the manual starting and short runtime of a petrol machine.

Power comes from Hyundai's own D400E engine, an air-cooled 418cc single cylinder producing 10 horsepower at 3,000 rpm. It drives a brushed AVR alternator rated at 4.5 kW continuous and 5.2 kW (6.5 kVA) at peak, distributed across three sockets: one 230V/32A for household and site equipment, plus two 115V outlets (16A and 32A) for reduced-voltage tools, switchable between 110V and 230V from the control panel.

The 13 litre tank, combined with diesel's lower consumption, gives up to 16 hours of running at 50% load and around 9 hours at full load, at roughly 1.44 litres per hour. Unlike most petrol units in our selection, the DHY6000SE can run on standard white diesel or on red diesel, which matters for anyone already storing agricultural or off-road fuel.

Ease of use has clearly been a priority. Starting is electric, by key, with no recoil cord to fight with, and the LED3 digital panel displays frequency, voltage and total running hours at a glance. A low oil alarm shuts the engine down automatically before damage occurs. The unit is also ATS/MTS compatible: paired with an optional automatic transfer switch, it can sense a power cut and start itself, then hand back to the mains once supply returns, which is the whole point of a standby generator rather than a portable one.

The sound attenuated canopy is what earns it the silenced name in the Hyundai range, and Hyundai's own figures put it at 70 dB(A) measured seven metres out at 75% load, noticeably calmer than an open-frame petrol generator at equivalent power. It is worth being honest here: several owners report that silenced is relative for a single cylinder diesel running at constant speed, and this is not a machine to leave running under a bedroom window overnight. At around 150 kilos it also stays in the wheeled, semi-fixed category rather than true portability, closer in spirit to the SG5200D than to a camping generator.

For anyone needing three-phase 400V power or a full working day of autonomy, the heavier Scheppach SG5200D remains the step above. For lighter, quieter and occasional use, a petrol model such as the SDMO Perform 3000 is easier to carry.
