The BigBlue P35 (also sold under its manufacturer name, SolarPowa P35) is a foldable solar panel designed to generate power directly from sunlight, with no battery of its own. It is a natural companion for recharging a phone, tablet or power bank while hiking, bikepacking or travelling by motorhome. It succeeds the popular BigBlue 28W with higher rated power and even more efficient cells.
Its 35W rating is spread across three ports: a USB-A port with Quick Charge (18W) and two USB-C ports, one of them delivering PD 25W with PPS (Programmable Power Supply), which adjusts voltage and current for a faster, safer charge. A second USB-C port is available for an extra device. Only the first USB-C port is not compatible with Apple devices: the USB-A port and the second USB-C port both charge an iPhone just as well as an Android phone.
The monocrystalline cells reach 25.4% efficiency, among the best in its category, capturing more energy from the same surface area, even under a slightly hazy sky. The panel also uses a dual parallel circuit: if one section falls into shade (a branch, a cloud, a backpack), the other keeps producing, limiting the output drop typical of panels wired in series.
For durability, the IP68 rating protects the panel itself against rain, dust and splashes (the USB junction box is not waterproof and should stay covered). Folded, the P35 measures just 21 x 12.3 x 4.8cm, barely bigger than a paperback, and weighs only 0.7kg. Unfolded, it spans 60.3 x 42cm. One thing to know before buying: like any portable solar panel, the P35 does not store energy. Pair it with a power bank to use that power once the sun goes down. The BigBlue P35 has been riding on the back of my pack for the past few weekends, and the first thing that stands out is the weight: barely 700g, it disappears into a side pocket without adding any real bulk. Unfolded flat on a rock in full sun, it topped up a 20,000mAh power bank in a single good day, and the PD 25W port makes short work of an almost empty battery. The two carabiners clip straight onto a backpack strap, which is handy on the move. One honest downside: under a hazy sky or when it is not perfectly angled, output drops well below the advertised 35W, several owners report barely 15 to 20W in those conditions. The dual parallel circuit does help when part of the panel falls into shade, but it will not work miracles in poor weather. With no built-in battery, you will need a power bank to actually store what it produces. Even so, for a lightweight, waterproof solar charger you can take anywhere, it remains a genuinely good pick.
