Varta

Founded in Germany in 1887, Varta is one of the few historic battery names to have followed the shift towards portable power and smart charging.

The Varta catalogue we track covers three distinct uses: alkaline cells in family packs, whose appeal is judged on unit price rather than on the brand, LCD chargers with chemistry detection, which prevent the dangerous mistake of putting an alkaline in a charger, and measurement accessories. The battery tester is the most profitable item of the lot: it stops you binning cells that still work, which pays for itself within a few months.

  • Capacity: 5,000 mAh (Li-polymer)
  • Outputs: 2 USB-A + 1 USB-C (up to 15 W)
  • Recharging: USB-C or micro-USB (cable included)
  • Simultaneous charging: Up to 3 devices
  • 5,000 mAh, 2 USB-A + USB-C, 3 devices, budget price
The Varta Power Bank Energy 5000 (reference 57975) is a compact 5,000 mAh power bank with unbeatable value for money. It offers two USB-A ports and a bi-directional USB-C port (input and output), plus a micro-USB input, and can power up to three devices at once, with charging power up to 15 W. Slim and light in its white shell, with four charge LEDs and a cable included, it is ideal as a reliable everyday backup battery without breaking the bank.
In-depth reviewRead our full review → 4.0/5 We tested the Varta Energy 5000 as what it is: a simple, reliable, cheap backup battery. And on that ground, it ticks the right boxes. The format is slim and light, it slips easily into a pocket or a bag, and the white shell has a decent finish for the price. On connectivity, we like the versatility: two USB-A ports and a bi-directional USB-C let you recharge the battery as well as power devices, and the micro-USB input helps out with older cables. Being able to plug in up to three devices at once is a real bonus when travelling in a group. The 5,000 mAh give around one full phone charge, sometimes a little more on small phones: it is the typical top-up to see out a day. Two honest reservations: the capacity stays modest (do not count on it for a whole weekend without a socket), and the 15 W power suits topping up without working miracles on fast charging. But for a serious backup battery, from a well-known brand and at a very low price, the Varta Energy 5000 is a smart choice.

Varta LCD Smart Charger+

See price and availability (28)

Clear LCD screen, handy USB power and 4 AA cells included: the good all-round compromise for the home.

  • Formats: AA/AAA (NiMH)
  • Screen: LCD (state, time left)
  • Input: USB, 4 slots
  • Included: 4 AA 2100mAh cells
  • LCD screen and USB charging, 4 cells included
The Varta LCD Smart Charger+ is a straightforward smart charger for AA and AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries. It charges up to 4 cells with individual management of each slot, and its LCD screen clearly shows charge state and remaining time, cell by cell. Powered by a USB cable, it plugs into a mains socket, a computer or a power bank. Automatic detection and protections ensure safe charging. Supplied with 4 Varta AA 2100mAh cells, it is a versatile, readable set, ready to use straight from the box.
In use you quickly grasp what its formula is after: the LCD screen is genuinely pleasant, you see at a glance where each cell stands and how much time is left, no more guessing. The USB power is well thought out, we even used it on a power bank over a weekend. Individual charging lets you mix AA and AAA without trouble. The 4 supplied cells help you get started. Let us be honest about the limits: charging is not the fastest, and some of the included cells age less well than premium eneloop. It is not aimed at users chasing speed or fine analysis functions, but at everyday family use. But for versatile family use, with a clear screen and the flexibility of USB, it does the job very well at a reasonable price.

Varta LCD battery tester

See price and availability (27)

The Varta-branded tester with LCD screen: it checks all common battery formats and clearly shows their state. Handy, readable and from a recognised brand.

  • Formats: AA/AAA/C/D, 9V, buttons
  • Display: LCD screen
  • Power: No battery required
  • Brand: Varta, energy specialist
  • Clear LCD screen, all common formats
The Varta battery tester is an LCD-screen checker from one of the big energy brands. It tests the most common formats (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, 1.5V cells) as well as button cells, and shows the state of charge on its screen, more readable than a simple needle. It needs no battery to work. Compact and easy to store, it is a handy accessory to check your batteries before binning or replacing them, and avoid nasty surprises with a controller or a remote.
The LCD screen is the real plus over a needle tester: you read the state at a glance, without interpreting a needle's position. It handles common formats and button cells well, and the Varta name is reassuring on longevity. We use it regularly to check controller batteries before a games night, no more interrupted matches. We do see one limitation: on borderline cells, the ones hovering between usable and spent, the reading can be a little optimistic. It is not a lab instrument, but for readable, practical home use at a contained price, it does the job very well.

Varta VP500

£515.99 (3)

With a 537Wh LFP battery, solar or car charging and a built-in wireless charging pad, the Varta VP500 delivers reliable backup power anywhere.

  • Capacity: 537Wh (LiFePO4 battery, 2500 rated cycles)
  • AC output: 700W, 1400W peak (2 sockets, 220-240V)
  • Charging: Mains, solar (200W max) or car, 80% in 2h with Dual-Charge
  • Weight: 7.5kg (275 x 200 x 202mm)
  • Wireless charging pad and emergency light, safe LFP chemistry
The Varta VP500 is a portable power station with a 537Wh LiFePO4 battery (up to 2500 rated cycles), delivering 700W continuous output and 1400W peak. It charges via mains, solar (up to 200W, compatible with the VS200 panel) or a car cigarette lighter, reaching 80% in around 2 hours with Dual-Charge. It features 2 AC sockets (220-240V), a 100W USB-C port, a built-in wireless charging pad and an integrated emergency light. Weight: 7.5kg, 2-year warranty.
In-depth reviewRead our full review → 3.8/5 We put the VP500 through its paces to see what Varta's first power station brings to the table, a brand best known for its batteries. The safety side impressed us: LFP chemistry inspires confidence, and the wireless charging pad on top is a genuinely nice touch day to day, just setting your phone down without hunting for a cable feels good. Solar charging worked well with a suitable panel, and the built-in emergency light on the side proved handy during a night-time outage. What we missed was any app or Bluetooth for remote monitoring, increasingly standard among competitors at this price. The 700W continuous output covers the essentials (laptop, router, small fridge) but not a genuinely power-hungry appliance. One thing worth watching: distribution is currently exclusive to Amazon, with availability that fluctuates. For occasional backup power or light camping, it does the job reliably.

Varta VS200

£429.99 (2)

Foldable, IP67-rated and rated at 22.6% efficiency, the Varta VS200 solar panel delivers 200W to recharge the VP500 power station outdoors.

  • Power: 200W (monocrystalline cells)
  • Efficiency: 22.6% rated
  • Ingress protection: IP67 (rain, dust, splashes)
  • Weight: 8.5kg (foldable, adjustable stand)
  • 22.6% efficiency, IP67 rated, compatible with the VP500
The Varta VS200 portable solar panel delivers up to 200W thanks to monocrystalline cells with a rated efficiency of 22.6%. Foldable and fitted with an adjustable stand, it sets up in seconds to charge the Varta VP500 power station or any other MC4-compatible device. Its IP67 rating protects it from rain, splashes and dust. Weight: 8.5kg. Supplied with an MC4 to DC(XT60) cable for a direct connection to the VP500.
We tested the VS200 alongside the VP500, and the pairing works well: the supplied MC4 to DC(XT60) cable plugs straight in, no adapter needed. Once unfolded and well angled thanks to the adjustable stand, output climbs quickly in good weather. The ETFE coating and IP67 rating are reassuring, a surprise shower isn't a concern. One practical downside: at 8.5kg and once unfolded, it stays bulky to carry and pack away, like most 200W panels of this format. We also missed a manufacturer figure for open-circuit voltage, useful for checking compatibility with stations other than the VP500. For anyone who already owns a VP500, it's a logical, well-matched companion.
