Detailed overview: Varta 5000 mAh power bank

The Varta Power Bank Energy 5000 (reference 57975) is a 5,000 mAh power bank designed for everyday top-ups at an affordable price. From Varta, a long-standing name in portable power, it focuses on simplicity and reliability rather than gimmick features, with a slim, light white shell that slips in anywhere.

On connectivity, it proves surprisingly complete for its range: two USB-A output ports, a bi-directional USB-C port (which both recharges the battery and powers a device) and a micro-USB input. It can thus charge up to three devices at once, with power reaching 15 W over USB-C. A charging cable is included in the box.

Its 5,000 mAh (around 18.5 Wh) give roughly one full charge to most smartphones, the ideal top-up to see out a day without fear of running flat. Four LED indicators show the remaining charge at a glance.

Compact, light and well under the 100 Wh airline cabin limit, the Varta Energy 5000 is aimed at those wanting a reliable, no-frills backup battery from a recognised brand, without paying a premium. A well-executed basic, perfect as a first purchase or as a second battery to keep in the bag.

Comparison

At around £10 to £17, the Varta Energy 5000 compares with the most affordable small 5,000 mAh power banks, through searches such as "cheap 5000 mAh power bank" or "best backup power bank". In short, the Varta Energy 5000 stands out for its generous connectivity for the price: it is one of the few 5,000 mAh batteries in this range to offer two USB-A and a bi-directional USB-C, and to charge three devices at once. The Anker PowerCore focuses on ruggedness but is limited to a single port, the Belkin adds USB-C but stays at two devices, while the Xiaomi Redmi doubles the capacity for a similar price, at the cost of a larger size. For a simple backup battery, from a known brand and on a very tight budget, the Varta Energy 5000 offers a features-to-price ratio that is hard to beat.

We tested the Varta Energy 5000 as what it is: a simple, reliable, cheap backup battery. And on that ground, it ticks the right boxes. The format is slim and light, it slips easily into a pocket or a bag, and the white shell has a decent finish for the price. On connectivity, we like the versatility: two USB-A ports and a bi-directional USB-C let you recharge the battery as well as power devices, and the micro-USB input helps out with older cables. Being able to plug in up to three devices at once is a real bonus when travelling in a group. The 5,000 mAh give around one full phone charge, sometimes a little more on small phones: it is the typical top-up to see out a day. Two honest reservations: the capacity stays modest (do not count on it for a whole weekend without a socket), and the 15 W power suits topping up without working miracles on fast charging. But for a serious backup battery, from a well-known brand and at a very low price, the Varta Energy 5000 is a smart choice.
