Detailed overview: Molicel P26A 18650 high-drain battery

Molicel might not be a household name the way Panasonic or Samsung are, and that is exactly what makes it worth discovering. This Taiwanese manufacturer has spent years specialising in a single niche, and it excels at it: high-drain lithium-ion cells capable of delivering huge instantaneous current without sagging or overheating. Among enthusiasts of powerful torches, demanding cordless tools and rebuildable electronics, the Molicel name carries serious weight, quoted far more often on specialist forums than mainstream consumer brands.

The P26A is a textbook example of that expertise. This 18650 cell offers 2600mAh of capacity, modest next to the 3400 to 3500mAh of the best “high-capacity” cells on the market, but that is not what it is built for: its real strength is a 35A continuous discharge rating, far beyond what generalist cells manage (typically 15 to 20A). In practice, it can power a very demanding cordless tool or an ultra-powerful torch without ever throttling performance, where a classic high-capacity cell would overheat or see its voltage collapse.

Technically, the P26A has a nominal voltage of 3.6V, a maximum charge voltage of 4.2V and a discharge cut-off of 2.5V, in a Flat Top (flat positive terminal) format measuring 18.3 x 65.1mm. It is sold bare, with no protection circuit: like any cell of this type, it is intended for experienced users comfortable with the usual precautions (a dedicated lithium-ion charger, no short-circuiting, storage in a case, staying within the voltage range).

While the P26A remains the best-known and most recommended cell in the community at this drain level, Molicel has since expanded its range with newer cells such as the P28A, slightly higher in capacity at an equivalent discharge rating. That does not take anything away from the P26A, which remains a perfectly sound, extensively tested choice with a reliability track record few high-drain cells can match.

We fitted several P26A cells into a DIY power tool pack and a very demanding torch, and the result is consistent every time: this cell handles heavy current without flinching, where a generalist high-capacity 18650 starts to heat up and sag in voltage. The Flat Top format fits most cell holders without issue. Capacity (2600mAh) trails the best high-capacity cells on the market, but that is not the point here: under heavy load, real-world runtime actually feels better than with a cell that is not built for the job. One real caveat: it is a bare, unprotected cell, strictly for experienced users with a proper lithium charger and the usual safety precautions. For anyone serious about high drain, it is a proven choice trusted on specialist forums for years.

Frequently asked questions: Molicel P26A 18650 high-drain battery

The P26A prioritises current: 35A continuous versus 15 to 20A for a typical high-capacity cell. In exchange, its 2600mAh capacity trails the 3400-3500mAh of the best generalist cells. It targets applications with very high current draw.

No, it is a bare Flat Top cell with no built-in protection circuit. It is intended for experienced users, who must use a dedicated lithium-ion charger and follow standard safety precautions (no short-circuiting, storage in a case).

It is a favourite for high-current cordless tools, ultra-powerful torches and rebuildable electronics, anywhere a generalist cell would overheat or see its voltage collapse.

It remains a trusted, extensively tested choice, even though Molicel now offers newer cells such as the P28A, slightly higher in capacity at an equivalent discharge rating. The P26A keeps an excellent reliability track record.
